Coffee @ Carluccios

While the better half convinced me to join her on a shopping in rainy Leeds, I quickly decided to leave her to it, as I took shelter at Carluccios on Greek Street.

I was looking for decent coffee, newspapers and a bit of atmosphere on a rainy bank holiday and that is exactly what I got and more. Would highly recommend for a bit of Italy in Leeds.

Restaurant Review - Rustique, York (and Mr Vikkis)

Today, Joe and I went on a foodie trip to York.  The mini food festival was on this weekend so there were lots of food stalls and freebies to try.  Having sampled quite a few chilli chutneys we bought three chutneys from Mr Vikkis.  They're brilliant so check him out on Twitter @MrVikkis and his website here. I'd especially recommend the banana habanero, which is unusual but brilliant.

We went for lunch at Rustique, near Clifford's Tower.  It's a little French place which is definitely worth a visit.   They do a great value 2/3 course set menu at lunch for £11.95/£13.95.

For starters we had the Basque egg and the crab cakes.  Both were really well flavoured: the crab cakes had a high fish content and the Basque egg is baked egg with Toulouse sausage, new potatoes, paprika and peas.

Mains were Jarret du Porc, which is a slowly braised pork shank, and pan fried calves liver.  This was my first ever tasting of calves liver and it was really tasty, but rich.  That combined with the crab cake was a bit too much for me at lunch time, and even Joe couldn't finish all the pork (pathetic!).  You also get no vegetables with the main courses, but I couldn't have fit them in anyway so wasn't bothered!

I'd recommend that you give Rustique a try.  It's a little bit of rural France in Yorkshire.

Champions League Final Special - Home made pizza

Chef Jo made the base from scratch, and it was left to rise while we went to Sela Bar to watch the excellent Dave Pilla (click for his myspace). The pizza was topped with chorizo, salami, roasted peppers, mushrooms, pineapple, sweetcorn & basil. In my opinion better than any shop bought pizza, and complemented the awesome Barca victory perfectly!!
